12 Days of West Chicago Artifacts: Schools
12 Days of West Chicago Artifacts
As part of our 12 Days of WeGo History series, we’re celebrating the stories behind some of the most meaningful pieces in our collection. With nearly 40,000 artifacts to choose from, we couldn’t possibly pick just 12, so each day we are sharing a themed group that helps tell the story of West Chicago.
This year’s series is also in conjunction with our preparation for the 250th anniversary of the United States by highlighting local history in a national context.
For much of our early lives, schools are where we spend our days, shape our identities, and learn who we are in the world. They are more than buildings, they’re communities within communities.
Whether it’s the smell of the cafeteria, the sound of lockers slamming shut, or the memory of a favorite teacher, schools stay with us. Often fondly. Sometimes not.
These artifacts from West Chicago’s schools give us a window into the educational experiences of generations past and show how learning has always played a critical role in the American story, especially as we mark 250 years of education in the United States.
